Dynamic behaviour monitoring.
Impact of grid events on a generation facility.

hydro-turbines-oMost generator digital control systems and plant information systems provide a fair picture of how the plant behaves under limited conditions. However they are oriented towards in-plant interests and unable to provide good data on dynamic plant behaviour when there is a disturbance due to grid events.

Insulect offers a solution involving a product that has proven itself many times over in the Australian market: IDM+. Some key drivers for generators to adopt the IDM+ monitoring approach include:

  • growing interest from regulatory bodies in the efficient response of power plant controls to sudden system disturbances.
  • dispute resolution between members of the electricity value chain: operator, plant owner, customer, regulator
  • analysis of mechanical and electrical parameters on the same time scale, relative to system events
  • reliable power system monitoring is an integral factor of the smart grid concept

PQ Conformance

All sectors of our energy market – Generation, Transmission and Distribution – share the concern of conformance with the National Electricity Rules. Compliance with these rules is acheived through the analysis of collated power quality data. This same data is used to improve power quality, set planning levels and advance grid reliability to meet customer needs.

All connection agreements by default incorporate a minimum negotiated access standard which includes the clause that a connection:

“will not adversely affect the quality of supply for other network users”

The Class A Distinction

Many PQ monitoring devices conform to the less strict Class B requirements. The Class A definition is an important distinguishing factor. Whereas Class B devices are mainly used for statistical purposes and troubleshooting, Class A devices offer several fundamental advantages:

  • can be used for standards verification
  • resolve disputes between utility & customer
  • understand embedded generation impacts
  • avoid penalties

Only Class A PQ monitoring enables parties to compare measured values and make a qualified judgement as to whether contractual obligations are being met.

Qualitrol PQ Hardware & Software

Insulect offers a range of PQ solutions for power generation, from standalone PQ monitoring (Qualitrol PMD-A), to multifunctional PQ, disturbance and fault recording (Qualitrol IDM+). All products interface with Qualitrol's software system iQ+, which boasts the most advanced PQ analysis and automation tools available.
